Rapid Response Event

17th September 2008

In the early hours of 8 August 2008, armed forces of the Russian Federation entered Georgian territory in response to Georgian military activities against separatists in the South Ossetia region the preceding day. The conflict rapidly extended to the territory of Abkhazia, another region in Georgia.

The seminar will address the background to the conflict, the legal and political issues arising from the armed conflict (including the application currently before the International Court of Justice), implications of the conflict for the region, and the possible options for the resolution of the conflict.
